09.01.10

Kavitha grinned from the top the the stairs and motioned for me to wait. I was glad to see her because she hadn't been as regular as before. I remember in the past, when her brother Karnan, and her would be waiting below their flat for me each week without fail. Now Karnan had started working and Kavitha had other distractions too. I played with my phone while waiting and after a few minutes, she ran down the stairs and got into the car. She announced that she would not be playing games today and I wondered if she had outgrown the games in teens club. It turned out, she had just had her hair straightened and could not wash it for a week, so she had to try her best not to sweat. She pulled out a hand held fan to stress the point. She was growing from a rowdy tomboy to quite a little lady. I asked her how her first week in secondary school was and she proceeded to tell me which boys in school had a crush on her and how her teachers in school were ok. We reached centre and she got out while uncle Mah informed me that he needed help with transport for the children in his area. This was good news as it meant we had new children today.
The hall was full of energy as kids played before the meeting started. This was the first meeting of the year after a two week break proceeding the overnighter we had. Most of the girls were seated while some of the boys knocked each other down by sliding on the smooth cement. Others threw balls at the mini hoop fastened on the beam. Kesavan came up to Thiyagu and I to tell us we shouldn't have holidays for Teen's Club as he was bored at home with nothing to do. We had 3 new children. Kumar and Sankara Rao were contacts from the Kid's Workshop organised by the Young Working Ladies recently, and Nalini was from Sunday School. Thiyagu chaired and we sang heartily after which Irene led the game. We played "Do you love me?" and it turned out well despite my apprehension that the children would be too shy and refuse to ask the question. Sankara seemed to fit in pretty well while Nalini was quite quiet. Kumar was somewhere in between.
After class, we went to the field for the first rounders game of the year. It was obvious that many were 'rusty' after having not played for so long.

ps. Rachel didn't cry today :)
